At Laurus we promote the notion that we don’t just solve IT problems, we solve business challenges through the intelligent deployment of IT products and services.
Last night I read an interesting article entitled “Breaking Throught the IT-Business Wall” in the April 2009 issue of CIO Insight (print only) that underscores the challenges IT departments face. Reporting on a new study (PDF) from Diamond Consultants that highlights responses from business and IT executives, there are six signs that can tell if a business is on the right track:
- CIO is Involved in forming business strategy
- IT Strategy is explicitly linked to business strategy
- Detailed roadmaps are in place before resources mobilized
- Business and IT are both accountable for results
- Projects are managed based on business value
- Whether IT projects meet metrics.
These are all common sense signposts–althought I would suggest that we do not yet have 100% of IT organiztions optimizing themselves around addressing these challenges.

I’ll be headed off to Silicon Prairie Social this evening in the Chicago suburb of Wheaton. SPS is a great networking event, co-sponsored by one of our technology partners, Sun Microsystems.
One of the challenges in the IT space is finding opportunity for casual interaction among the different players in the supply chain. So often conversations are formalized via pre-existing purchase relationships, a desire to avoid the traditional sales or marketing communications, or people in general simply being too busy to have a conversation. I’ve found that events like SPS provide a chance to have casual conversation about current on-the-job challenges, upcoming opportunities, or just chatting about the news of the day.
I’ve heard that they have a full house tonight, so no walk-ins. Should be a great night of networking!
